I found out on the 29th that there was a chance of getting your book published in hard copy for you to own if you completed the nanowrimo challenge (national novel writing month challenge), and it said on the website that there was 1 day and 16 hours left in the contest. Now to win you had to submit an original story with no less than 50,000 words. I grabbed all the iced coffee I could find, and started pulling ideas right out my ass lol. For 12 hours I was at my computer typing away, attempting to make the deadline. I periodically went on the sight to update my word count. At 6:00 in the evening that night, I went back on, and decided to take a good look at the main page. It told me that ONLY those who submitted 50,000 words at midnight THAT night, would be given an extra day for editing and completing the story. Well you can bet I was right pissed off, I'd been awake for 24 hours, spent half of that time writing a brand new original story, only to find out that I wouldn't make the deadline.

Though I am furious at myself for not entering at the beginning of November, I am kinda happy. I completed 12,597 words in 12 hours, so I was 1/4 of the way to winning in just 1 day. I'm gonna be entering again next year for sure with a new original story idea.

And what happens to the book I was working so hard on for 12 hours? Is it gonna go into the trash? Hell no! After working so hard on it, and really making the characters come alive, I'm gonna keep it going, and post it up on [link]

K here's the synopsis. Long ago at the edge of The Silver Thread Galaxy, a deep dark void began growing, enveloping and destroying every star system in it's path. The inhabitants of The Silver Thread came to call it "The Galactic Destroyer." Nobody could stop it, but a group of brave people from various planets gathered together with one goal; to preserve all the different races of The Silver Thread, helping the less advanced species to evacuate when the Galactic Destroyer approached their homes, and warning those who could escape in time to preserve their people, plants, and animals. This group called themselves The Galactic Preservation Force.

A young Forethian Captain named Lorek has been assigned to warn a technologically advanced, yet small colony of The Galactic Destroyer's approach, however when he reaches the planet Kaylek he discovers that the inhabitants aren't a technologically advanced race. They are in fact Forethian colonists who's ancestors abolished technology, and brought them back to a simpler time.

Princess Shemra, leader of the tree people on Kaylek thought she had her hands full when she took over from her corrupt mother, who nearly brought destruction to the village. Her troubles had only begun when a strange, and handsome man came down from the heavens, and warned her about the impending doom that approached her planet.

Lorek and Shemra only have ten years until The Galactic Destroyer reaches Kaylek. Ten years in which Lorek must transform Shemra and her people from simple tree dwelling tribesmen, into a superior race that can build and fly a ship off of Kaylek before it is too late.

Lorek continued hitting buttons, and muttering quietly for several minutes. Finally the screen on the computer panel lit up, and an alien face appeared on the screen. It had a bony protrusion sticking out of the top of it's head in a semicircular shape, with two things that would have looked like horns if they weren't rounded at the tip on either side of his head. He had two slits for a nose, pale green skin, and what looked like tentacles sticking out over his lips, partially covering them and quivering as he spoke. “Ah Captain Lorek! We've been expecting your call. Have the citizens of planet Kaylek been properly informed of the situation?”
“Yes they have Admiral, but there's a problem.” Lorek said nervously.
The Admiral raised an eyebrow, and the left side of his mouth tentacles raised slightly with it. “Oh? What sort of problem?”
“These people are not as advanced as we thought they were. Their ancestors originally came from Foreth like mine, and settled on this world. The only difference is that when they got here they abandoned all of their technology, and decided to become a primitive society. The space craft we detected was just the remnant of the ship that brought them here. They don't have the ability, or technology to escape Kaylek.”
The Admiral frowned. “This is troubling news indeed. Our pre-offworlder task force is currently being held up in the Glavis system. There was some unforeseen difficulties with the animal and plant life there. They will be cutting it very close indeed with only six months left until the Galactic Destroyer reaches that area of space. I've had to redirect all available forces there until we can clear the planet, but we're not sure if we can this time.”
Lorek's brow furrowed. He had seen many worlds go that way. There were so many planets taken by the Galactic Destroyer all at once when it moved into a new territory of space, and after seeing their own worlds destroyed so few people volunteered to join the Galactic Preservation Force. Not many wanted to go near the Galactic Destroyer again, or see the devastation it caused to the people on other worlds before it arrived. “How long will it be before they can get here to help us?”
The Admiral looked down, as though he were grieving. “Captain Lorek, I am afraid we will not be coming.”
“What?!” Both Lorek and Shelra cried.
“Our initial scans of the planet showed that Kaylek has no unprotected species on it's surface. Because we also detected the ship on it we assumed it was inhabited by a race capable of intergalactic space flight, and so only the warning party was sent. I regret to inform you Captain that it is protocol to dismiss planets such as Kaylek that are nothing more than colonies which chose to abolish technology.”
protocol my ass! These people didn't chose to stay here, their ancestors did! We're from the same race, our first home was destroyed by the same force that's destroying the rest of our galaxy! Didn't the founders of the Galactic Preservation Force tell the Forethians that all of their people on every planet would always be given amnesty, and protection from the Galactic Destroyer, because they warned the founding planets?” Lorek yelled enraged.
“That deal only included those who did not abandon their technology, and could aid the GPF. These people do not qualify for our assistance.” He looked at Shelra sadly. “I am truly sorry, but there are hundreds of species between you and the Galactic Destroyer who aren't even able to build fires, or communicate with one another, let alone ask for assistance, or build a ship.” He gave Lorek a meaningful look.
“Get them out on the ship they came in on.” He said in a hushed voice.
The Admiral nodded. “If you can get that ship of theirs flying in the next ten years before the Galactic Destroyer reaches Kaylek, you will not only save these people Captain Lorek, but they will have proven that they are able to contribute to the Galactic Preservation Force, and be welcomed within it's folds, entitling them to the protection of their Forethian ancestors.”

Well there ya go. On another quick note, here's the characters, and some of their info.

Lorek: Raised on a GPF satellite after his colony was destroyed as a child, he decided that he would join the GPF, and help save other people, just as the GPF had saved him. He secretly hoped that he would someday find another colony of Forethians to join up with, and eventually retire to when they found a safe place to settle.

Shemra: Currently the Princess of the tree people, and daughter to the former Princess Shekra. Her mother had become cruel and twisted, killing all the baby boys born into the village, with the exception of her older brother Shelra. When she was 19 she walked in on her mother trying to burn off her brother's gentiles with a torch, and stretch his urethra with a sharp stone, so she killed her, taking over the position of Princess. She has a deep sense of duty which is sometimes the only thing that keeps her going. To her there is nothing more important than her people's safety, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness.

Shelra: First born, and only son of Shekra, he witnessed his mother murdering his father when he was 5, then watched as all of his age mates suffered the same fate. Only his little sister threatening to end her own life if their mother killed him, prevented him from meeting the same fate. She saved him once more when he was 20, however his mother had burned him so severely that his scrotum needed to be removed. With severe scaring from the burns and stretching, even with his testicles he would not have been able to capitulate with a woman. He found true love with a man named Baresh, but fears the day his sister forces Baresh to wed a woman so that they can begin to recover from the loss of a generation of men.

Taleya: A proud and noble warrior woman, named chief huntress of the village, she is second only to Shemra herself. She is not only devoted to Shemra, she's desperately in love with her. Though she accepts her place as friend and adviser, knowing that Shemra will never return her feelings, she dreads the day her beloved leader forces her to wed a man, and bear children. She has a severe hatred for Lorek, and even though a part of her knows it's irrational, she blames him for Shemra not returning her love.

Balesh: A simple basket weaver of 30, he was spared Shekra's wrath only because he became a man just before she began killing off the boys of the village. He's bright, and enjoys taking on new challenges. Out of all the people in the village he is most open to the new ideas Lorek brought with him. If men were allowed to hunt, Taleya would find him a powerful rival in both strength and stamina. His outgoing and joyful personality is infectious to all who meet him. He is Shelra's devoted lover, and though he fears the day he will be forced to mate a woman, he is determined to continue his relationship with the leader's brother.
